How AI Agents Pay: Inside StraitsX x402 Support

AI agents can already decide what services to use. The harder part is giving software a way to pay without forcing it through a checkout experience designed for a person.

x402 addresses this by allowing payment requirements to become part of a standard HTTP interaction. A service can tell an agent or application what payment is required, receive an authorised payment and continue the workflow once that payment has been verified.

For StraitsX, native x402 support for XSGD and XUSD gives developers a way to bring Singapore dollar and US dollar denominated stablecoin settlement into machine initiated payment flows, including use cases such as APIs, data, compute and other digital services.

What is x402?

x402 is an open payment standard that enables applications and AI agents to pay for digital resources directly through HTTP.

It is built around the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code. When a client requests a paid resource, the service can respond with machine readable payment requirements such as the amount, asset, network and recipient.

The client can then submit an authorised payment and retry the request. Once the payment is successfully verified and settled, the service returns the requested resource.

This makes payment part of the interaction between software systems rather than a separate checkout journey.

Why Is x402 Relevant to AI Agents?

x402 is relevant to AI agents because it gives software a standard way to identify, respond to and complete payment requirements programmatically.

An agent accessing premium data, calling a paid API or using an external model can encounter a payment request while completing a larger task. Instead of stopping the workflow and sending a user to a separate checkout page, the application can handle payment according to permissions already established by the user or business.

This makes x402 particularly relevant to usage based services where payment needs to happen as part of the software workflow rather than outside it.

How Do XSGD and XUSD Support x402 Payments?

XSGD and XUSD support x402 natively, giving developers SGD and USD denominated stablecoin options for programmatic payment flows.

StraitsX announced x402 support for both stablecoins alongside its Solana expansion in December 2025 XSGD and XUSD subsequently went live on Solana in March 2026.

For developers, this provides greater flexibility in how applications settle value. A regional service can use XSGD where Singapore dollar denomination is relevant, while XUSD provides a US dollar denominated option for applications serving broader markets.

Rather than treating payment as a separate layer added after the application is built, x402 allows these payment flows to sit closer to the software interaction itself.

How Does an x402 Payment Work?

An x402 payment follows a request, payment and fulfilment flow within the HTTP interaction.

The protocol flow is straightforward. An agent first requests a paid resource. The service responds with HTTP 402 and the payment requirements. The agent or application then submits an authorised payment payload. The payment is verified and settled according to the supported payment scheme, after which the service returns the requested resource.

By connecting payment directly to the request for a digital service, x402 supports use cases where software needs to purchase and consume resources without moving through a conventional checkout journey.

Why Does Solana Matter for x402 Payments?

Solana provides an environment suited to frequent, lower value onchain payments because of its high throughput, low transaction costs and fast finality.

These characteristics are relevant when an AI agent is paying for individual API calls, data, model inference or other digital services where payment can occur frequently and in smaller amounts. StraitsX cited these characteristics as part of the rationale for bringing XSGD and XUSD to Solana.

However, x402 itself is not limited to Solana. The standard is designed to work across multiple blockchain networks and payment schemes, allowing applications to support the networks and assets most relevant to their use case.

That distinction is worth making because otherwise the current blog can accidentally make x402 sound like a Solana specific protocol.

What Can Businesses Build With x402?

Businesses can use x402 to build payment directly into APIs, AI services, digital marketplaces and other software driven products.

An API provider could charge for individual requests rather than requiring a subscription. An AI platform could allow an agent to purchase access to external data when it needs it. A digital service could make premium content available once a machine readable payment has been completed.

The common thread is that the payment is connected to the resource being requested.

This does not remove the need for controls. Applications still need to determine what an agent is authorised to spend, which services it can access and how transactions are recorded. Depending on the implementation, businesses can introduce mechanisms such as spending limits, approved counterparties and predefined permissions before an agent is allowed to transact.

Will Agentic Commerce Rely on x402 Alone?

No. x402 is one payment mechanism within a broader agentic commerce environment.

Stablecoins and x402 are particularly relevant when software is interacting directly with APIs, data and other digital services. Cards remain valuable when an agent needs to purchase from merchants that already accept card payments. Bank transfers and other payment methods will continue to serve different commercial requirements.

For StraitsX, the opportunity is therefore not to make every transaction use the same rail. It is to make digital value easier for software to access and use across the payment environments where businesses already operate.

Native x402 support for XSGD and XUSD extends that capability into HTTP based payment flows, giving developers another way to connect programmable stablecoin settlement with AI driven applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can AI agents pay for using x402?

AI agents can use x402 to pay for digital resources such as API access, data, model inference, digital content and other software based services that support the standard.

Does x402 allow AI agents to spend without user approval?

No, x402 provides the payment mechanism, while the application determines the permissions and controls under which an agent is allowed to transact. These can include spending limits, approved services and other predefined conditions.

Which StraitsX stablecoins support x402?

XSGD and XUSD support x402 payment flows, giving developers Singapore dollar and US dollar denominated stablecoin options for machine initiated transactions.

Is x402 only used on Solana?

No, x402 is designed as an open payment standard that can support different networks and payment schemes. StraitsX currently supports XSGD and XUSD for x402 payment flows on Solana.

Does x402 replace cards or other payment methods?

No,  x402 is particularly suited to software based transactions such as APIs and digital services. Cards, bank transfers and other payment methods will continue to serve different merchant and business use cases.
